Since I was very young I have had a fascination with photography. The small mysterious silver and black box, with buttons and knobs and twisty and turny bits, that required a special combination of movements to make the back compartment open. Where inside there was a metal canister with something brown and plasticky sticking out and looping around on the other side. I can’t tell you how many times my parents took their camera in for repairs thinking that something was wrong with it because of all the over exposed and ruined photos that came out of their camera.
Sorry Mom and Dad.
When I was 14 my family went to Vancouver Island for our summer vacation, we found ourselves at Butchart Gardens. My mother’s happy place, and not so much mine. After driving my dad crazy about being bored he handed me his camera and gave me a brief lesson as to how it worked and said, “have fun kid”. I did! Since that moment I’ve been hooked.
I graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in 2004 with a Major in Photojournalism. I have had images published in the Calgary Sun as well as numerous Alberta Weekly newspapers. I have also had images used in TV commercials on City TV.
One of my favorite pastimes is to people watch, at events or just on the street as they walk by. Much of my studying for school was done in coffee shops so I could just look off into space and watch the people interacting. For this reason I took Photojournalism. So much can be said with one image, I want to tell stories with my images.
I want to tell your story.
